Walnut Mid-Century Revival,[**SOLD**}
This fully restored vintage piece has great mid-century vibe and versatility. It could be a sideboard, a media console, a small dresser, an end table, a bar, a compact buffet, linen chest, or an entry hall table. Whatever it needs to be, it will support your journey in style. I artfully remedied its missing legs, made an ugly blemish on the top disappear, and revealed spectacular walnut wood grain hiding behind the original faded ombre finish.
The piece is remarkably well built: dovetail joinery on all drawers; solid red oak and poplar drawer sides; and substantial red oak plywood drawer bottoms. Beautiful thick walnut veneer used throughout. Attention to detail is evident, with full ¾” thick sides, glue blocks for extra strength, and dust shields between each drawer.
The damage to the top went deeper than the topcoat finish. The challenge with repairing thin veneer is that too often you can sand right through to the underlying substrate! When this happens you have to painstakingly paint-in a perfectly matched faux finish.
In my case I was able to repair much of the gouge in the veneer by wetting it and placing a towel and hot iron over it, letting the steam swell the crushed wood fibers. After some judicious sanding you can’t tell where the problem was. I used Mohawk’s Vinyl sealer and Pre-Catalyzed Spray lacquer to finish the top and drawers after stripping and sanding. The sides only needed cleaning and waxing.
The total effect is a clean, modern piece with plenty of versatility and storage. You could successfully use this in your bedroom as a small dresser or night stand. But its beauty deserves a public space: as an end table in your living room with a sharp lamp and your smart speaker? A compact buffet in your dining room holding linens, candles, and serving pieces? The top’s finish is so lustrous that a few small pieces of art or silver picture frames would reflect gorgeously. Let this be the design showpiece in your home.
