Upcycled Dining Table, [**SOLD**]
This is not my normal vintage restoration, but I had a lot of fun reimagining a boxy, bland, birch-veneer, big-box store dining table into a more appealing modern style. The now fashionable modern matte black base is complemented by a decorative art-grained grey top. Besides the good looks is its versatility: it normally seats four but comes with two leaves (that conveniently store under the tabletop) that doubles its capacity to seat eight!
This table could have easily ended up in a dumpster, as an acquaintance was moving and she was leaving it behind. The finish on the leaves no longer matched the tabletop as the latter had been bleached out by the sun, and someone had already painted one of the legs! Refinishing the very thin veneer hardly made sense technically, plus the wood had virtually no figure or grain to redeem it. I have been wanting to try a painting technique by wonderful YouTuber Shannon @BlackSheepHouse (Thank you!) that mimics the brushed grain finishes of Pottery Barn furniture.
After a thorough degreasing I scuff-sanded the table. To ensure the best adhesion of my topcoats I primed everything first with Zinsser 123 Grey Primer. Next came a base coat of Sherwin-Williams Outerbanks acrylic paint. The “magic” step was next: applying Varathane Briarsmoke Gel stain, brushing it out with a deck brush to produce uniform striations. Finally, a stiff wallpaper brush cut back and removed the gel stain to let the paint show through for the desired textured look.
The oil-based gel stain took days to dry. Meanwhile, the base was painted with Melange Jett Black Mineral paint. When everything was dry I applied three coats of General Finishes High Performance Polyurethane Flat Topcoat. The result is quite stylish!
Dimensions: 55” L (70” w/one leaf; 86” w/both leaves) x 33” W x 29” H
**SOLD**. Cash, Venmo, PayPal accepted.
