Red Mahogany Credenza
What the heck is a credenza? HGTV says, “Back in the 14th century, the term "credenza" referred to a decorative piece of dining room furniture where servants would sample food and drink for elites. The idea was that if the noble family's meal had been poisoned…the attempt on their lives would be discovered prior to serving. Thus, Italians called the cabinet credenza, which translates to "belief" or "confidence.”
“Today, credenzas are largely used for storage purposes and have become almost interchangeable with sideboards and buffet tables. Credenzas are typically long and low to the floor, with no or very short legs.” Besides storage, credenzas are also popular as stands for huge TVs or room separators behind couches.
This modern piece is almost 5½ ft long with a beautiful red mahogany finish on cherry and mahogany wood veneers and sleek black satin finished pulls.Behind each pair of doors is an adjustable-height shelf; there is more than 17 cu ft of storage, and conveniently there are cut-outs in the shelves and back for routing audio or video cables.
The top had suffered water damage and had to be completely stripped, bleached, sanded and refinished. I purposely used a transparent (vs. the original opaque) dye stain, and the resulting buttery-smooth refinished top shows off the handsome grain.I also reglued or replaced the loose or missing veneer on the door edges before giving the entire cabinet 3-4 coats of Varathane satin polyurethane for durability.
This is a versatile and signature design piece for your dining, living or family room, perfect for entertaining during the upcoming holidays.
