Mid-Century Danish Teak Dining Chairs, [**SOLD**]
These two teak dining chairs have been beautifully restored including new seats that highlight the simple lines and fine materials of their mid-century design and workmanship.
These extraordinary chairs were designed by renowned Danish architect Poul Volther in the 1960’s. His Chair Design No. 361 was produced in Denmark by Frem Rojle. Each chair has a Danish Furniture Makers Control label certifying that the origin of the chairs is Denmark and that they conform to standards set by the industry with respect to quality of materials and workmanship.
The chair’s seats are hand woven of Danish cord; a tightly-wound cordage made of paper. When I purchased them from Community Forklift both seats needed to be completely replaced. The best quality Danish cord comes from Denmark; that is the only kind I use. All previous Danish cord chairs I have re-woven used a traditional system of small L-shaped nails (also imported from Denmark). The nails help align the cord and tension it to the sides of the chair’s rails. To my surprise these chairs used no nails: instead, 3/16” crown head staples by the hundreds were used to position and tension the cords.
I carefully documented the original seat pattern before removing all the old cord and staples. I also cleaned and refinished the legs and top rail of the chair before weaving to avoid sullying the new Danish cord. For the first chair I substituted nails for staples since I didn’t own the needed stapler. By the time my hands recovered enough to weave the second chair, I had bought myself a crown head stapler. After some practice, I made the perfect 2nd chair seat using staples.
