Large Mahogany Slant-Top Desk, [***SOLD***]

$0.00

This is the piece of furniture that started it all.

Seven years ago on a rainy night my son rescued this vintage desk from the streets of his Mt. Pleasant, D.C neighborhood. The rain had lifted the book-matched mahogany veneer and satinwood stringing on the lid. Several pieces of mahogany banding were missing. The desk stayed in his home for several years, then gathered dust in my basement for several more. Then one day for some reason I watched my first-ever YouTube video. It was an episode of Thomas Johnson Furniture Restoration…the die was cast!

Fast forward to 2019 and my restoration. Made by the George C. Flint Co. in NYC, based on markings the piece pre-dates 1934 when the company changed logos. It has superior mahogany veneer on the lid and top, and solid mahogany sides and legs. Delicate satinwood inlay is used throughout. I was able to re-use the lid veneer but replaced the original inlay and banding with a custom replacement.

I fixed numerous flaws in the finish and then hand-padded on several coats of shellac. Solid brass knobs were picked appropriate to the period. The lid opens to reveal a beautiful set of storage bins, two drawers, and a work surface of more than 3¾ square feet! Three full-width drawers below can store papers, books, or your laptop. All the drawer locks have been restored and a key is included.

While I’m sentimentally attached to this piece, I have acquired another vintage desk for my own use, so it’s time to let someone else enjoy this beauty. Please give it a new home.

Dimensions: H 39” x W 28.5” x D 16”
