Glass-Top Coffee Table

This upcycled glass-top coffee table may be just the sharp modern living room update you have been looking for.The rectilinear lines of the black base support a lattice-work top spray finished in Melange Restoration Bronze paint, and covered in ¼ inch plate glass.
Traditional shellac or lacquer finishes on all-wood coffee tables suffer a lot of abuse from moisture and alcohol; this glass top allows you to display potted plants and serve cocktails on it without fear. It’s a sweet size, and the top’s neutral color fits almost all decors, while the shiny glass gives it a polished vibe.
The top’s original lacquered finished had failed and required refinishing. My original vision was to restore the top and paint the legs. The top’s plain wood veneer was clearly very thin so I carefully scraped off the old finish by hand, then started gingerly sanding by hand. However, I still inadvertently sanded through the paper-thin wood veneer in a few spots, dashing my hopes of an easy refinish.
While this is not a name-brand furniture piece, I was surprised how thin the veneer turned out to be.This was confirmed by examining the damage on one of the legs, where presumably a pet’s leash (or teeth!) wore a large depression right through the veneer and ¼” into the core.I filled the damaged area with Mohawk Epoxy Putty and painted the legs and base with Melange Jett Black paint. The repair is invisible. I added three coats of Varathane satin polyurethane on the entire table for added durability.
I’m pleased with the job I did to rescue this table and I hope to find its new forever home this Thanksgiving week.
