Compact Barrister Bookcase [**SOLD**]
Last month I posted a 4-unit barrister bookcase; this month I just finished a sharp-looking 2-unit version. It sold within 24hrs of posting it to Instagram…
Recall these bookcases are designed as a set of stacking sectional units that can be modified in number and size as needs change, as well as being easily transportable). This unit was also made in Grand Rapids, MI, by the Gunn Furniture Company. It has solid oak sides and doors (again with some nice quarter-sawn figured grain), that period wavy old glass, and oh-my, some terrific looking claw feet! This unit has one 9” and one 11” section, with an overall height of 34”.
With every piece I work on, the first step is a thorough cleaning and degreasing to remove dirt and old furniture polish and their residues. The base required several repairs to reglue cracked sides and replace some broken-off sections and missing glue blocks; it’s super-sturdy now. I then scuff-sanded all parts before applying 2-3 coats of unwaxed shellac, lightly sanding between coats. I rubbed-out the shellac finish, and removed all the rust and then waxed the steel hardware.
With its compact size this vintage piece could be at home in your entry or bedroom, housing your special book collection, or displaying glassware or collectibles.Over time you can readily expand and stack additional sections; compatible pieces can be found on EBay or Facebook. So, if you’re looking to start collecting vintage furniture that looks good and still has practical value in today’s world, and at an extremely fair price, this is an excellent piece to start with. Message me if you would like to come see it!
