Brandt Mahogany Drop-Leaf Table

$275.00

What qualifies as adorable? Newborn babies? Yes! Puppies? Yes! A beautifully restored vintage but diminutive mahogany drop-leaf table made right here in Maryland in the 1940’s? Definitely yes!

From the brass-capped lion’s paw feet, the fluted legs, the gracefully turned pedestal, to the gorgeous mahogany grain and lustrous finish of the top, everything about the petite scale and high quality of this table made by Brandt Furniture in Hagerstown, MD is simply adorable.  The storage drawer with its amazing lion’s head pull is the icing on the cake.

Brandt Furniture was founded in 1901 by Harry Brandt in his garage. In its prime it employed close to 200 people and had many high-profile customers including the White House. For over 100 years the company produced high-end custom furniture that shipped all over the US and Canada.

This table, however, was just hours away from the landfill. Only the dedication of a neighbor who texted me that it was at the curb saved it from the back of a garbage truck.

It had a number of problems. The flaking top needed refinishing. The base had holes and was braced with many extraneous nails, screws and odd pieces of wood, including a cut-off piece of a Spalding hockey stick. One of the table-leaf hinges was the wrong size.

I methodically stripped off the old finish, hand sanded the entire piece, re-stained the dings and edges, then applied 3 coats of General Finishes Arm-R-Seal satin topcoat.  The heavily tarnished brass feet and drawer pull were polished and lacquered, and a new hinge installed. I removed the hockey stick and repaired the gaping holes with new mahogany, carefully scarf-jointed into place.

This would be a perfect hall or entry table, or look simply adorable in your kitchenette or dining area!
