Art Deco Waterfall Cabinet, [**SOLD**]
This vintage Art Deco cabinet has been beautifully refinished to take on a new mission as a china cupboard, liquor/bar cabinet, bookcase, curio display unit, or whatever your imagination comes up with. When I saw it at Habitat for Humanity’s RESTORE I knew its compact size would be ideal to add a unique and special storage vibe in a small space. It can easily fit into your living room, dining room, kitchen, entry hall or bedroom, and seamlessly make a design statement complementing any decorating style.
This piece with its signature Art Deco waterfall top and exquisite book-matched walnut and geometric oak and maple veneers was laboriously French polished to a high gloss using a padding lacquer called Lubricite77. This proprietary finish has been used by generations of refinishers who use a specially wrapped cloth and hand polishing technique to build up the highly reflective finish typical of Art Deco furniture.
Based on Internet searches I found two other examples of this piece. The hardware appears to be original. The glass door originally had an inset lattice panel that is missing on this piece. But everything else is intact, including the original two shelves with the double-cut plate rail grooves.
Interestingly there is a very faded furniture tag stapled to the back of the piece which identifies itself as being manufactured by the “Stanley Furniture Company, Stanleytowne, VA” and sold by some illegible company in Syracuse, NY. Stanley opened for business in 1924 in the heyday of the Art Deco era and became a major national manufacturer before being sold off in a merger a few years ago. I have not verified the authenticity of this tag, but you can continue sleuthing the piece’s origin if you buy it!
