Antique Barrister Bookcase, [**SOLD**]
This is a completely restored four-unit glass front Barrister Bookcase with a Secretary desk section made by the Schram Bros. Furniture Co. of Chicago circa 1910. If you are unfamiliar with this style of bookcase, they were originally produced to hold series of legal books for lawyers, and were made in separate sections that could be stacked two, three, four or more sections high along with a base and top. This makes for easy expansion and transport as the pieces readily separate.
The failed and wrinkled shellac-based finish has been totally refinished to a smooth high-luster using a padding technique called French Polishing. All of the joints have been reglued where necessary; the section backs have been repaired and refastened; the ingenious scissor-like door slide mechanisms have been restored to open and close effortlessly.
From an exhaustive online nationwide search of over 500 vintage units being offered for sale, I found only four that included a similar Secretary desk unit as part of the package. The keyed drop-down door reveals a large 24” x 32½” work surface for your laptop, tablet and phone. The vintage office cubbyholes with two drawers has been cleaned, sanded and refinished to hold important papers and office supplies. When the work day is done, simply flip up and lock the door closed for privacy and security. This antique is the perfect compact home office setup, or a nice protected display case for your collectibles, art and/or curios.
