Vintage vs. Modern Furniture?

In Thursday’s 2/24 Washington Post columnist Jura Koncius asked home furnishings executive Anna Brockway from Chairish, “Can you blend vintage with modern furnishings at home?”

Followers of my Instagram already know the answer is a resounding YES!  Still, her interview is a worthwhile read with plenty of helpful hints for purchasing and decorating with vintage furniture; on a budget; with a small space; what to avoid; repairs; what’s hot, etc.

Anna Brockway:

We love the idea of decoration being eclectic yet complementary. All of the pieces in your space don't have to be of the same style or from the same period, but can be tied together through a cohesive palette via upholstery and the addition of accent pillows and throws.

Anna Brockway:

The trick to modernizing traditional brown furniture is presenting it with consideration. What makes brown furniture feel old and dated is when it's presented in crowded, cluttered spaces with . . . lots of other brown furniture. What makes a traditional piece special - a carved leg, a special wood grain - gets lost. So we recommend doing a rigorous edit, selecting those pieces which you feel are special and then placing them in the room with negative space around them. This allows the piece to shin[e] and creates a more contemporary vibe.
